Mentally Exhausted but Can’t Switch Off?
Mentally drained but unable to relax? Explore common stress patterns and practical ways to wind down.
Tired body, busy brain
You finish the day exhausted, sit down, and suddenly your mind starts running through tomorrow’s jobs, yesterday’s mistakes and every unfinished conversation. Persistent stress can make it harder to relax, even when you finally have time to rest.
Work out what is keeping the engine running
Are you taking on too much, checking messages late at night, relying on caffeine to get through the day or feeling guilty when you stop? You cannot solve every source of stress at once, but identifying one pressure point helps.
Make a shutdown routine
Try a ten-minute end-of-day reset: write tomorrow’s top three tasks, note anything you cannot control tonight, put work notifications away and choose one low-stimulation activity. A routine is a cue to stop problem-solving, not another job to perform perfectly.
Rest is not always scrolling
A phone can distract you without helping you recover. Experiment with a walk, stretching, music, a shower or sitting outside. Notice what leaves you feeling steadier rather than simply occupied.
When exhaustion sticks around
Ongoing fatigue, poor sleep, low mood or difficulty functioning can have many causes, including medical ones. A GP or qualified mental-health professional can help assess what is happening. Do not assume everything is “just stress.”
