Relationship Stress: How Men Can Start Talking
A straightforward guide to talking about relationship stress without blame, shutdown or a perfect script.
Why the first conversation is hard
Fear of an argument, feeling criticised or not knowing how to describe emotions can keep a difficult topic buried.
Pick the right moment
Avoid beginning during a heated argument. Ask for a time when you can both give the conversation some attention.
Use observations instead of accusations
“I’ve been feeling distant lately and want us to understand each other” is usually easier to hear than “You never listen.”
Listen to understand
Reflect back what you heard before trying to solve it. You can disagree and still show that you understand the other person’s perspective.
Get appropriate support
If arguments involve threats, coercion or violence, prioritise safety and specialist support. In Australia, 1800RESPECT offers confidential support.
